The hat looks like an NSDAP political leader hat. The coat with the two buttons(on pockets) is throwing me for a loop though.

Unfortunately, some of these small pictures (some as small as 2.5x2.5 inches) are not the best quality and the focus is also lacking. I will try for some high resolution scans and then get close-ups...

Yes, this is a Luftwaffe soldier and on his left sleeve above his wrist is the patch that indicates what his job is, but, I can't make it out.Bernie

I believe the hat is nothing more than part of a dress uniform, as opposed to the standard cap worn in the field. Only a guess, but the type of hat in the photo may have been issued to non-coms and...

I believe that indicates the rank of sergeant. I know that later in the war someone I know was a sergeant and wore exactly the same "V" on the left upper sleeve.

His rank, two stripe shevron, which I believe he has instead of a one stripe Gefreiter(lance corporal) would be a Obergefreiter, or a corporal. The WWII German enlisted man rank system was different...

Branch of service, is on the collar tabs, or Litzen. In the Luftwaffa, there litzen where color coded. Yellow, would be for a pilot, paratrooper, and ground service. Red for Flak, and Green would be...
